The Connection Between ADHD and Adulting

January 17, 2023

Are you or is someone you know struggling with attention issues? It's not just kids with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In fact, millions of adults are living with ADHD and may not know it. It is a neurological condition that can make it more difficult to concentrate, organize and manage time effectively. It can look different in adults than it does in children. Adults may be able to focus on specific tasks but still possess overwhelming levels of distraction, which lead to procrastination, difficulty organizing tasks, and chaotic work environments.

Additionally, adults may manifest a more subtle version of the disorder by being relatively low-key yet still having trouble remembering details or following directions. People with unrecognized or unmanaged ADHD report feeling overwhelmed and insecure about their ability to do simple things that others take for granted.

Causes of ADHD

So what causes ADHD? ADHD is a complex condition with many genetic and environmental potential causes. It's important to remember that research is ongoing, and ADHD looks different for everyone. Genetic factors like a family history of the disorder can increase someone's risk of having ADHD. Environmental issues such as a lack of connection with peers, insufficient emotional support, or exposure to toxic substances may also lead to an increased risk of developing ADHD. It may not be easy to pinpoint the causes. However, take the time to identify potential triggers so that you can build a personal plan and acquire the tools you need to be successful and live a fulfilling life.

Getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult

In today's attention economy world, it can be challenging for adults to know what is causing the constant distractions and difficulties with focus. We are all constantly connected to the internet via our phones, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, TVs, and more. It's hard to decipher if one has ADHD or simply struggles to navigate everyday work and personal life demands. Thankfully, you can take steps to get a diagnosis of ADHD if that is what is suspected. You can start by talking with your primary care physician or therapist about your feelings, concerns, and experiences. Your doctor may consider a physical exam and medical history to help determine whether there is a different underlying condition affecting your concentration or mood. Your doctor may also recommend further evaluation, such as psychological testing or consultation with a psychologist or psychiatrist—who has experience diagnosing and treating adults with ADHD. Knowing the right approach to getting diagnosed allows you to gain insight and find solutions that can help improve the quality of your day-to-day life.

Treatment options

Many treatment options are available to help manage symptoms and lead an overall successful life.

  • Medication: Explore with a doctor for prescriptions that may help to regulate brain chemicals, improve focus and concentration, or reduce hyperactive or impulsive behavior.
  • Therapy: Work with a therapist to identify the underlying issues causing ADHD symptoms and learn about skills for better communication and problem-solving strategies.
  • Lifestyle: Go inward and consider regular exercise, avoid sugary snacks, and make small changes to your everyday routine. Breaking old habits and building new ones is challenging - it takes discipline and consistency - but it'll make a world of difference and be worth it!

Remember, we all have challenges in life, and there's no shame in asking for help when it comes to managing yours.
Consider taking a small step today. Create a safe space in your home designated purely for work or relaxation that is organized, clear of distractions, and provides a calming atmosphere. With some patience and effort, adults living with ADHD have the opportunity to take back control of their lives.
