How I Conceived Naturally Six Months After Birth Control (After 20+ Years on It!) - A Guide for Women in Their 30s
After being on birth control for over 20 years, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I stopped. Six months later, I was pregnant. Here’s exactly what I did.
Bringing a baby into the world is a deeply personal and, at times, mysterious journey. And I was never the person who planned out my future kids’ names. Motherhood felt like a distant and to-be-determined chapter, one I’d get to someday when the timing was right. Then, one day, it was right. Or at least, I knew I was ready to try.
After spending over two decades on birth control, I wasn’t sure what to expect when my partner and I decided we were ready to start a family. But six months after stopping birth control, we conceived naturally—and had the most beautiful pregnancy, an unmedicated delivery, and a sweet, healthy baby boy.
This is my guide to how I prepared—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—to make this miracle happen as a geriatric pregnancy (an obscene label on women over 35).
1. Getting in Alignment: Mind, Body & Spirit
Long before I peed on an ovulation strip, I knew that getting pregnant wasn’t just about biology. I needed to be in alignment—with my partner, myself, and the universe.
✨ With Myself: I had to shed things that no longer served me. Limiting beliefs. Self-damaging habits. Even relationships that drained me. I had to embrace all my parts, the ambitious woman, the nurturer, the dreamer, and the one terrified of losing herself in motherhood.
✨ With My Partner: We had real conversations. Were we ready? What did ready even mean? Did we have the space, the energy, the willingness to change? This wasn’t just about making a baby—it was about making a life together, with a new person in the mix.
✨ With the Universe/God/Whatever You Believe In: Because let’s be real, conception is part science, part miracle. I opened myself up to the idea that I wasn’t fully in control—but I could create the best possible conditions for a miracle to happen.
2. Understanding My Fertility: The Pulse Check
In America, fertility care is reactive. You either “try naturally” or go straight to a specialist when you struggle. There’s no in-between.
I wasn’t willing to wait until I had a problem. I wanted a pulse check on my fertility, and I found Kindbody’s Pulse Assessment—an affordable, out-of-pocket test ($99) that gave me real data on my body:
✨ An internal ultrasound – To count my follicles (egg supply).
✨ Bloodwork – To measure key hormone levels.
✨ A consultation with a fertility specialist – Without jumping into expensive treatments
The results? Exactly what is expected for a mid-30s woman trying to conceive. Nothing scary, just clarity. And with clarity comes confidence.
3. Clearing Space: My Body Was the First Home I Built for My Baby
Once we decided, I got serious. Not in a stressed, over-optimizing way, but in a this-matters kind of way.
✨ I stopped birth control – My doctor said it takes about three months for hormones to regulate, so I gave my body that time.
✨ I cut out alcohol and anything that dulled my clarity – Not because I had to, but because I wanted to be fully present.
✨ I moved my body – Not to shrink it, but to strengthen it. To feel good.
✨ I started prenatal vitamins – Because laying the foundation early made sense.
✨ I tracked my cycle – Even before the three-month mark, just to learn my body’s rhythm. Turns out, I was irregular, which made this even more valuable.
This wasn’t about obsessing over a baby—it was about becoming the kind of mother I wanted to be before the baby even arrived.
4. Tracking Ovulation: Getting Acquainted with My Body
I picked up The Baby Dust Method and started tracking my cycle, using ovulation test strips daily. Not because I was desperate, but because I wanted to be prepared. I started a spreadsheet, logged my results, and paid attention.
✨ I got used to peeing in a cup.
✨ I learned my body’s patterns (or lack thereof—hello, irregular cycle!).
✨ I understood when I was actually fertile instead of guessing.
It was never about controlling my body, but about understanding it.
5. The Miracle of Conception & Pregnancy
Six months after stopping birth control, we conceived naturally. It felt surreal—this body, my body, knew exactly what to do.
✨ My pregnancy was beautiful.
✨ My labor was unmedicated.
✨ My baby was born healthy and strong.
✨ My postpartum journey was transformative.
This journey was never just about having a baby. It was about becoming someone new—a mother, a wife to a dad, a leader in my tribe. It was about stepping into a new identity while honoring who I’ve always been.
If you’re on this journey, I see you. I hope this blog helps you step into your own path with clarity, confidence, and trust in yourself.
More to come—I’ll be sharing every phase of this miracle journey. Let’s grow together.
