Recently, I’ve started to reflect on how the inevitable end of life can guide us, particularly those of us with ADHD, towards a more intentional and fulfilling existence.

My journey began with the stark realization that life is finite—a challenging but vital acknowledgment for someone with ADHD, where the concept of time often feels abstract. Writing my own eulogy helped me crystallize what I truly valued, beyond the chaos of daily distractions. What did I want my legacy to be? This wasn’t just an exercise in foresight but a necessary anchor for my often wandering focus.


Redefining Values Amidst Distraction

For those of us with ADHD, aligning actions with long-term goals can be especially tough. Our passions are many and our interests are fleeting, which can dilute our efforts and scatter our energies. I had to learn to channel my diverse interests in a way that fed into my core values—creativity, empathy, resilience—rather than detract from them. This meant crafting routines that accommodated my ADHD, allowing for flexibility but also ensuring consistency where it mattered most.


Embracing Impermanence as a Motivator

The transient nature of time is a concept that hits differently when you live with ADHD. The urgency to act can often lead to impulsivity, but when harnessed correctly, it becomes a powerful motivator. Understanding that nothing is permanent has taught me to prioritize, to focus on what truly enriches my life and legacy, and to let go of the fear of missing out that often plagues my decision-making.

Yet, it’s this perspective that has empowered me the most. It provides a framework that turns our natural urgency into a focused drive towards a meaningful end.
